This morning, the Literacy Specialists at Whelan Elementary School, who support students in building foundational reading skills that will turn them into lifelong readers, presented to caregivers at the monthly Family Coffee Hour.
At the coffee hour, Stefanie Porrazzo-Literacy Coach, Marisa Murphy-Reading Specialist, Gina Petrone-Reading Specialist, Marissa Rosenfield-Camargo-Reading Specialist, and Kristen Winam-Reading Specialist gave a presentation on what Reading Support looks like at the Whelan.
The specialists explained that in the classroom, students receiving reading support are in small groups with reading instruction from the classroom teacher.
During WIN block at the school, students who need extra support are placed in small reading groups and receive reading support from the Literacy Specialists.
The specialists also gave caregivers some tips to motivate children to read regularly and to learn to love reading. These included:
- Create a cozy spot for them to read.
- Share your favorite books.
- Tell stories with different voices, and props and ask questions to bring stories to life.
- Visit bookstores and libraries.
- Encourage students to engage with a variety of reading sources including graphic novels and magazines.
- Set a reading routine.
- Reward reading progress with praise or a small reward.
- Have children read to a pet, stuffed animal or sibling.
