Hill School Students Team Up With Revere Senior Center Knitting Group to Keep Families Warm

Fourth and fifth grade student council members at the Staff Sergeant James J. Hill Elementary School are teaming up with the Revere Senior Center to provide hats, neck warmers, and scarves to families in need this winter.

Over the past few weeks, the school’s student council members began meeting with the senior center’s Anna Piccardi and other members to formulate a plan on how to keep families warm. The group came up with the idea to have the senior center's ‘knitting group” make hats, neck warmers, and scarves then have the Hill students distribute the items to families.

“This group of seniors does both knitting and crocheting,” explained Piccardi. “Last year, the knitting group decided their project would be to make our signature red and white scarves. We then sold them to raise money for activities at the center. This year, the group decided to make hats and neck warmers so students at the Hill School could distribute to families.”

Piccardi said members of her knitting group were excited by the idea of partnering with the school and working all year to create the items.

“The ladies that visited the school had a wonderful time chatting with the children,” said Piccardi. “The students were very kind, showed a true interest, and engaged with our seniors. We are looking forward to partnering with the Hill School in the future.”

Hill School Principal Nancy Martel said student council members met with the knitting group several times while they were coming up with distribution plans.

“The students took some time to ask how they learned to crochet or knit,” said Martel. “Our 4th and 5th grade student council members are going to determine how we get the hats out to our families in need. We are hoping this will be the beginning of a partnership between the Hill School and the Revere Senior Center.
